After the Holidays: Parents Need to Ask for the Data

This matters more than you think.

Extended breaks can cause real regression for students with disabilities. If your child struggles after winter break, don’t rely on anecdotes or “they’ll catch up.” Ask the school for data.

Within the first 2–3 weeks back, parents should request:

  • Baseline academic data (reading, writing, math and behavior)

  • Behavior and regulation data

  • Service provider progress monitoring

  • Comparison to prior to the break performance

  • Documentation of skill loss or increased support needs

Why this matters:

  • Regression and recoupment time impact eligibility and services
    • Data drives IEP goals, services, and placement
    • It prevents supports from being reduced prematurely

You’re not being difficult, you’re being informed.

If the school isn’t already collecting this information, they should be and you can request it in writing, and they must respond.
