Brandy Ringo2025-08-12If I could give Sunnye more than 5 stars, I would a thousand times over. From the moment we connected she was a steady source of support, guidance, and strength for me during one of the most challenging fights of my life, securing specific accommodations, including but not limited to a one-on-one para my 5-year-old son, who has level three autism, desperately needed but our school district kept pushing against. Sunny was not just knowledgeable and skilled, she was patient with my emotions, my tears, and my fears. She listened without judgment, encouraged me when I felt defeated, and fought alongside me every step of the way. She understood not just the legal side but also the emotional weight a parent carries when advocating for their child. Because of her dedication and expertise, my son is now getting the support he needs to be safe, successful, and truly seen at school. There are not enough stars, words, or thank-yous to express the gratitude I feel. Sunny is not just an advocate, she is a blessing, and I will forever be thankful for the light she brought into this battle.

Federal and state laws exert an important influence on the education of students with emotional and behavioral disorders not only in LaPorte but nationwide. The most important of these laws is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The LaPorte school district must adhere to the requirements of IDEA when educating students with disabilities in special education programs. In addition to IDEA, other federal and state laws also affect special education programs for students with EBD. Two other important areas are laws that address (a) supervisory responsibilities of teachers of students with emotional and behavioral disorders and (b) issues of bullying in schools. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and to examine the ways that this and other important laws affect the education of students with EBD and their teachers
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) typically manifests in children and adolescents through persistent patterns of defiance, hostility, and disobedience. If you have a child in the LaPorte area, early identification of behavioral issues through regular pediatric visits or developmental screenings can lead to timely assessment and intervention. Pediatricians and mental health professionals can provide guidance on when further evaluation is needed. Educating parents about child development, effective discipline strategies, and positive parenting techniques can be crucial. Parenting programs that teach skills like positive reinforcement, setting clear expectations, and consistent consequences can help manage behavior.
